Datong Ancient City Wall, located in the central area of Datong City, was built by the Ming Dynasty general Xu Da on the basis of the old city in the fifth year of Ming Hongwu. It is one of the most intact ancient city wall buildings in our country. The main city gates are Heyang, Yongtai, Qingyuan, and Wuding. At the same time, a series of military facilities such as moats, suspension bridges, city towers, arrow towers, moon towers, dry towers, watch towers, corner towers, and control army platforms were also built. The city wall is 14 meters high, 18 meters wide at the bottom, and 12 meters wide at the top. It is magnificent and peculiar in architecture, with perfect defensive facilities, and is a famous city with unique features in the history of Chinese military architecture. Because the Datong Ancient City Wall occupies a very important position in the northern defense, it played an important role in many battles. Therefore, it has always enjoyed the reputation of 'the key to the north'. However, in the sixth year of Qing Shunzhi (1649), after the Qing soldiers broke through Datong City, they slaughtered more than 100,000 people, and the Datong City Wall was demolished by five feet, which was greatly damaged. Since then, although the Datong City Wall has been repaired by later generations, it has not been restored. Since the Republic of China, the Datong area has experienced many wars, from the warlord melee, the Japanese invasion, to the Datong Jining Battle in the Liberation War, the Datong City has been damaged to varying degrees. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the north, east, and west city gates were also demolished, and only the south city gate tower was 'protected by the frame'. At the same time, the remaining urn city, watchtower, etc. were demolished one after another, and the city wall bricks were almost all stripped off, leaving only the earth city wall around the city. In 2008, the Datong Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government decided to implement the historical famous city protection project, starting from the east city wall, according to the Ming Dynasty regulations, a comprehensive city wall restoration project was launched. The restoration project adheres to the principle of 'original craftsmanship, original shape, original materials, original style', and carefully and scientifically supplements it with necessary modern reinforcement and reinforcement technology for restoration. Due to the complete survey data of Liang Sicheng on the Datong City Tower, detailed photo documents, and the remaining city wall foundation stones, horse face foundations, etc., the restoration project has a detailed and accurate basis. In May 2009, the Datong Ancient City Wall Restoration Project officially started, and the rammed earth city wall of the East City Wall began to be repaired with bricks. By the end of the year, the main project was nearly completed, which truly restored the glory of the city wall. In 2010, the south city wall was repaired. In May 2011, the north city wall began to be repaired, and it was completed in September 2012.
